Asbestos
Surveys
So, you'll be wanting to know what you get for
your money, the simple answer is, exactly what you need.
I was careful not to say exactly what you
want because many times people have contacted me and said 'I WANT a piece of
paper to say I've had an asbestos survey done'. I explain that a survey is not
just a piece of paper but in fact a legally required (multipage) document
(CoAR2006) that will be used to help protect people from a substance that can
cause cancer (I'm not usually that blunt about it but you get the picture).
I try and tailor the asbestos services to
each client, here are some examples:
-
A young couple buying a house or flat find
their building survey mentions asbestos, they contact me because they are
concerned that the material is either going to put them at risk or will cost a
fortune to remove. I give them a basic cost of an inspection and to take a
couple of samples. I usually have a scan around the property while I'm there
to see if there is anything else not mentioned. It is usually the case that
they have a low risk material that is perfectly safe to leave alone and need
not be removed. Informed reassurance is part of the service.
-
A small business owner has been approached
by a local council officer or HSE inspector on an official 'visit' and they
have asked to see their asbestos survey, this is happening more frequently,
the business owner has no idea what to do. They contact me and I explain the
situation that the regulations requiring them to have a survey actually came
into force in 2006. It is an accepted fact that despite this happening in
2006, it is estimated that only about a third of businesses have actually had
one carried out!. I carry out the survey and include all the help I can to
enable them to manage their asbestos materials (if they have any) including
guidance notes for carrying out certain tasks on low risk materials.
